President’s Report
Robin Cole, Outgoing WSC President
As my second term of office comes to an end, I am happy to report that
Woodridge remains an excellent, well-supported, financially-stable and hopefully
code-compliant fenced swim club. The stability of our club is due to the
dedication of its members. When I talk about WSC, I emphasize that it is a
community pool, run by the people that use it. I am fortunate
to have the support of a volunteer board whose mission is to make our pool a
safe, clean, and comfortable place for all members. In order to do this, we must
manage our finances and resources, recruit new members, offer our time and
talents,
in addition to having a direct line to the weather controller.
The Board of Directors has been meeting through out the winter planning for
another exciting season. In preparation for this newsletter, I went back
thru the WSC archives dating to the year of construction in 1961. The pool has
always had a dedicated following and I hope that dedication continues for
another 40 plus years.
Our big project this year is the replacement of the fence. There is a new
county code for general use pools. The fence needs to be 72” tall, with smaller
openings, gates must have special entrance and exit locks, and any items, (rock
walls, trees, electrical boxes, etc.) around the outside of the perimeter that
are less than 5 ft from the fence must be considered a potential way for someone
to try to climb over the fence, meaning in some areas the fence will need to be
8 ft tall. Needless to say, I am becoming an expert in fence rules. This project
will be costly, but will improve the safety of the pool and the neighborhood.
I am happy to announce that our managers, Tom Speight and Brooke Stites, from
last year will be returning this summer. Maudry Speight will be back as
our head swim coach and lead swim teacher. We also hope to have dive lessons and
adult swim lessons.
A HUGE thank-you to our departing board member, Nancy Quint, who has
served us as both secretary and treasurer. I am also pleased to announce our
highly-capable new candidates for board positions: Curt Blake, President;
John Cross, Treasurer; Lynn Adkisson, Member at Large; Jennifer
Yeatts, Swim Team; and Lauren Roy, Member at Large. Laurie Pike,
Membership
Coordinator, will be departing from the board in August when her family moves to
California, and I have been nominated to take over that position when she
leaves. These positions will be voted on at our annual meeting on April 17. All
members are
encouraged to attend (held at the Yeatts’ home at 9855 NE 23rd Street in
Bellevue). If anyone is interested in joining the board, please let me or Curt
know.
Please remember that new members are essential for the ongoing success of the
club. We have one of the few six-lane recreation pools with a baby pool, swim
team, and swim and dive lessons. WSC is open for summer memberships for a
very reasonable fee. Tell your friends, neighbors, classmates, people at
the grocery store about our club. You, the members, are our most important
marketing tool. Be sure to invite your friends and neighbors to visit the pool
on Super Sunday, May 18th at noon. The tradition continues with food, fun and
the kids’ coin toss. The membership table will take your information and
dues, the swim team coordinators and coaches will be there to answer questions
and sign up swimmers, and the board and staff will be there to welcome all
prospective, new and returning members. There will now be a finder’s fee for
bringing a new
member to the pool! Receive a $50 credit toward your 2009 dues when a family you
refer joins the pool. As a result of increases in the cost of fuel and supplies,
we have increased annual dues by $10.00 for the 2008 season.
Woodridge is a community asset and a personal asset for all of us. Many
people volunteer time and effort to improve the enjoyment of the pool for
everyone. I hope that each and every family will find a way help out. Come to
spring clean up days, donate cleaning supplies, snacks/fluids for the workers,
donate your skills – plumbing, tree trimming, tile skills, painting, weeding,
volunteer for pool events – Super Sunday, swim meets, fund raisers, etc…any and
all offers will be much appreciated. Please say yes when someone asks you to
help.
We have added a $25.00 clean up fee to the dues. Come and volunteer and you
will receive a $25.00 credit toward next year’s dues.
Invite your friends and neighbors to Super Sunday. Lots of fun, food and of
course swimming. I look forward to another memorable season at Woodridge.
Facilities Report
Steve Hoffman
What an eventful winter/spring we had last year with a new coat of paint,
new filter media, tree removal and an updated electrical service. Thanks to Tom
our pool manager for keeping the place running so smoothly. This year we have
more items to add to the list. Here are some of this winter's projects to help
keep your pool in top condition: tile replacement, fence improvements to meet
Department of Health guidelines, and repairs to the diving board and platform.
This spring we will have our annual Spring Clean Up day and all are
encouraged to join and make the place shine. For dates and times refer to our
web site.
This year will be my last as facilities manager and the pool needs some fresh
ideas for this position so tell any life guard or board member if you are
interested in shaping the future of Woodridge Pool.
Manager's Report
Thomas Speight
I am looking forward to coming back as pool manager this year. I
learned a lot last year and I am looking to implement what I learned this year.
Several things to get ready for the season are as follows:
- Any lifeguards looking for summer full-time or part-time work should
send me a resume and make sure that all of your certifications are updated.
Please state how many hours per week you would like to work.
- Please remember that all members need to have an
emergency contact form on file before
they use the pool.
Please feel free to contact me.
Assistant Manager's Report
Brooke Stites
Hello everyone! It’s hard to imagine that summer is quickly approaching and
that the pool will soon be opening. I am thrilled to be the Personnel Manager
again this year. I’m eager to see all of our members and to begin what I know
will be a fabulous summer! I am hoping that we get lucky this summer and have
lots of nice weather.
With this newsletter, you should have received a
Permission for Child to
Swim Unaccompanied and Emergency Consent Form. All families need to please
fill out this form in its entirety. You can either send this form in with your
2008 pool dues or bring it to the pool the first time you attend this summer. I
cannot stress enough how important this form is, both for your and your
children’s safety. Safety is of the utmost importance to all of the staff at
Woodridge and it helps tremendously to have your updated information in our
office.
Feel free to
email me with any questions or concerns
you may have.

Robin Cole and Laurie Pike
Last year, we had 138 member families: 129 active, 9 associate, and 6

advertising, so please keep those referrals coming. Bring your friends to the
pool on Super Sunday on May 18 so they can see our beautiful setting and
experience our family-fun atmosphere. A new member flyer is included in this
newsletter. NEW in 2008 is the member referral finders’ fee! Refer a family who
joins in 2008 and receive $50 off your 2009 dues!
